Sorry for jumping in like this, what has been posted here has been really helpfull, Adam. Drunkmonkey etc.

I have been setting up an engine and with a very thin base gasket and no head gasket my squish is as high as 1.8mm.

If i do decide to drop the base gasket, will it be hard to get a good seal against a case that has had some use and what sealant to use? I understand this is a bit of an abstract question as it depends on how straight and clean the case base is...

Thanks

Silicon instant gasket applied very thinly will provide a good seal without a gasket.

As Coaster has said. Indeed, if you can still access Taffspeed's old website you would see that they used to configure TS1s so that they did away with head and base gaskets to maximise reliability. Hopefully, this will put your mind at rest that you don't need gaskets to have a reliable seal. Silicon sealant applied very thinly is fine.
