I'd wonder if there were any signs of anything before the scooter died and what speed where you doing at the time, ie were you going along at a normal speed in 4th and it died as you went along or had you just parked up, switched off, came back and it was dead?

As for the original problem, good luck, hope you get it sorted flipster, if you were closer I'd pop round and have a look , it's always difficult to try and diagnose a problem by distance but you seem to have ruled out the obvious
