Thanks for the light Martin ;-) and a green one that's better quality IMO.

When removing the silver one a couple of diodes/resistors, or whatever they are, literally fell off :-? hence my initial query regarding authenticity.

I bought a new one at a parts fair for a 12V series 1 and it looks like the silver one in the pic. Came in BGM packaging, but no instructions, not even which colour wires do what. Tested it at work with a 12V supply before fitting and it was poo, hardly any of the LEDs came on and some of the resistors got really hot. An electronic engineer at work ordered some new diodes and fixed it up for me (he said it was quite odd for these to just not work) and said it the circuit was a bit strange.
Anyway it works but is pretty dim, gotta say. Might put some extra ebay LEDs on it as per Donnie's that I suspect works well. Mine didn't seem to fit too well within the lens either and I needed to use longer screws.
Expected better from BGM but maybe it's a cak fake. If I could of remembered the stall I bought it from it would have gone back.

LOL, it is pretty bright, certainly a hell of a lot better than the old set up for sure!

My only slight issue is that the running light does flicker a bit, only really noticable on low revs to be fair.

Im wondering about the viability of wiring it to the battery to be run from that all the time but have no idea what the draw would be on it, it's that or fit some sort of capacitor, but i have bugger all idea about them , what type and where it would fit in the wiring if you see what i mean.

I've got to say the rich Presley led rear light boards are extremely bright and well put together ... I wired mine up to a 9v smoke alarm battery and you could hardly look at it, a sunglasses Job !!!
