Just to be clear DP, the current being regulated is NOT the current for the ignition, that is on a seperate circuit and goes to the CDI. I think there is a bit of hype with this unit, I believe it works in the same way as the convensional regulators and will regulate the voltage by shorting to earth when voltage rises above a preset limit and will include a half wave rectifier for the DC trickle charge. I seem to remember someone asking Phillip from BGM some technical quaestions either on here or the LCGB forum and not getting a very technically conclusive reply. But not to worry, it will do what you want it to 8-)
