Start out on 6th softest..... its a combination of weight / riding style / road surfaces that you need to experiment with - only you will know what feels right to you.
harder settings are fine for example on a race track where surface is smooth, but going down a rough country road would be worse than standard - but the beauty of BGM's is the ease of adjustment - just stop and rotate the dial!
In the wet its worth softening them off 2-4 clicks!
