So true,Muttley McLadd wrote:Joking aside though. An iron barrel, 30 mil carb and a clubman can wouldn't cost you a mint, or need a rebuild every year. The cost of all the other fancy bits and pieces would buy you a lot of motorbike to go fast on. And you wouldn't be off the road for a week while the annual rebuild takes place.
Top speed

Its a bit of a barstool too, this sx200 at Elvington obviously hit 82mph and Barny in our club has touched his at 76mph.Now mine should be as quick as his topend but id absolutely destroy him off the line but people love to quote top speed, acceleration doesnt come into it.If you quote a top speed you get this................

Start to quote standing start on the 1/4 mile and you will look like this..............................

my findings via sat speedo were similar to mentioned above; rebuilt a sil engine with standard barrel off garage floor, unidentified piston, parts fair sterling pipe and 30mm dell'orto out of a mates cupboard sprayed with red smoothrite. total cost of build around 20 quid with a couple of seals and gaskets, top speed 65 down hill!.someone told me indian barrels were fast as they were stage 4 already but im not so sure theyre that good. as you get over 50mph on tarmac you need increasing horse power to push the unaerodynamic shape of a scooter through the air resistance. the lammy speedo in its little housing of course has no resistance at all!!!that said it was fairly reliable at 60mph which is fast enough to get to a rally, not that good on petrol though. bottom eventually west for a tourist trip to exhaust land.still acouple of rallies left so...i got Ralph Saxelby to reinvent the engine as a stopgap til i could aford a more expensive set of components.the engine was stripped and fitted back together with a gp200 box and 19 tooth front sprocket, standard massacelli crank and a tv200 barrel, blue print rebuild with the porting fettled but not radically expanded, 30mm dell'orto and the sterling pipe. the bike would pull just shy of 80 on a good day .getting past 75 where all the variables start to come into play. wind, road surface, rider weight etc, not radically changed but a well built version of innocentis best iron barrel and a monumental difference in "top speed". i see no reason why a 200cc iron barrel can't make 85mph on the downhill stretch of the m1 between the Notts turnoff and tibshelf services.

Theye are not a proper stage 4,i asked a tuner that once and his reply was "are they fook!" But they aint bad either and a lot better than standard.Certainly pays to pay a little more and get the rest off the barrel done,i had my piston modified too and worth every penny.alcoholic maniacs sc wrote:someone told me indian barrels were fast as they were stage 4 already but im not so sure theyre that good.

Yeah , mahle piston thing ring (cheaper than asso but essentially the same ) , tidy up everything , match etc get bore clearance correct 3.5 thou-4thou IMO, and you have a very decent motorway mile munching good mpg with a decent return in speed. Never needed a rebore all the time i had mine and it was thrashed everywhere, remind me why did i go back to alloy again.....!!!
Just checked my old dyno sheet again it was 15 hp out of the box with jl3 and mikuni tm24 , this was before Sean touched it , so at a informed guess around 18HP and good tourque with these barrels, on A roads when we went to Builith Wells Rally couple years back my mates on TS1's could not leave me , only when back on motorway did they have the edge ...slightly..
