I could have stuck to the 500 miles rule but I'm certainly glad I didn't because my engine has kept giving me more and more. Certainly you can be a bit more liberal with the throttle but you've still got to be wary of holding it at sustained speeds for long periods. I kept at it and didn't really start opening it up until I'd done over 1000 miles and it bloody flies now.
