turned out the the clutch was not slipping at all. It was a worn out drive spring and ramp on the front sprocket that made it seem like clutch slip. Mr. Winstone and Mr. Tid diagnosed the problem :bigsm:

Update, managed to get a couple of hours on the scoot today, whipped the barrel off and was greated by this, you were right

:

No sign of damage on the underside

Cleaned up ok and rings freed off easily enough
I reckon the piston at least started to go about 3 weeks ago when it suddenly lost power whilst I was giving it some stick. I noticed that the exhaust flange has been leaking so it might have been a bit weak. The piston is an MB Racetour and the crown seems very thick, there is no discolouration underneath the cratered area so I might put it back together and see how it goes before risking another piston in it.

A sad sad sight pal..id say first cause of action would be to investigate and seek the reason why its got so hot and started to eat the piston..

piston rings might be free but it's goin to get hot when it starts blowing past the damaged top ring groove,

That is a good point.
Sean, what I meant was that the colouration is uniform, no localised signs.
