It's Colin actually Nig ;)

Try removing the air filter hose and take it for a quick spin to see if the 4 stroking goes away, that should tell you if it is induction related. If it runs ok without the hose then try it with the hose back on but with the air filter removed.

With regard to the pickup or LT coil being the cause, it's easy to test them with a multi meter without removing the stator.
Many apologies Colin, I'm easily confused...

I tried your suggestion of removing the air hose & filter, as it was quicker than the carb and stator swop (which are still on the list!), once it got warmed up it started missing/four stroking again.

Also measured the coil resistances cold and hot (not that it would show a break down at >3k rpm):
White - earth: 34 cold; 4 hot. (should be about 0)
White - yellow (red): 127 cold; 94 hot. (should be 95-120)
White - green: 483 cold; 589 hot. (should be 450-540)

Cheers, Nig ;)

Lam46, just followed your suggestion and swapped the 200 Jetex for another. Repeated my test route, got to exactly the same place and it started four stroking again. Rode home and got stuck behind a stopped bus, when I pulled away it revved freely again and was ok all the way back.

I'll give it a few more trips, but I'm leaning towards the LT coil or pickup breaking down intermittently.

Is it worth investing in a BGM stator? or should I get a decent LT coil and pickup? If so, who sells decent ones, any recommendations?

Cheers,

Nigel

You could just change the pick up..see how it goes first though.

Hello sideout,I`ve just had the same problem as yourself except mine also did from cold,in the end i`ve swapped my stator for a spare one my mate had and hey presto the problem has gone away.
Not sure what part of the stator was wrong as I haven`t got a multi-meter to test it.
Hope this helps.

Yep, Ove. I reckon your right, I've just been out on it again for half an hour and it's intermittent so I'll either change the pickup and/or LT coil or get another stator.

Cheers,

Hi

Now fixed, so just to finish this one off for anyone interested in the future:
Symptoms - not revving cleanly over 3000rpm, four stroking/mis-firing
Changed - plug, plug cap, ht lead, CDI, carb to no avail
Bought - pickup, LT coil, BGM stator as advised (shotgun tactics/deparation!)
Fitted - pickup (unfortunately could actually fit the flywheel with the first one supplied  )
Timing - checked with strobe ;)
Tested - just did 17 miles, including stopping and warm start

Officially MENDED!

The plan was to get this stator operational and then swap it out for the BGM. The Indian one can then be a spare. This plan has not been implemented (yet) :)

Thanks for your input one and all 8-)

Yeah, that was back in August 2011, it's now May 2012 and the little sod's just done it again. Same symptoms, starts to 4 stroke after 1/2 throttle. At least I know what it is this time
Soulsurfer advised me to get a BGM stator, which I did, but I didn't fit it because I tried fitting the replacement pick up first which worked - for nearly a year

So, the next solution is...... fit the BGM stator (like I was told last year)

Well done for keeping everyone updated as to cause but I can't say that I'm in the least surprised as Indian stators fail with regularity. Perhaps they should change the saying...

"There are 3 things that are certain in life; death, Indian LT coil failure and nurses."

NB: Not my saying ;)
