Its best to but i dont on three of my machines and dont suck in stray lumps of metal.Many will say do but many will run without and to honest,never had any issue or worn out barrel.Looks better too.

I dont run a filter but scoot started playing up, checked loads of stuff inc jets. then checked the slide and it was badly worn, changed slide and hey presto all sorted.the carb was only 2 years old and should not have had that much wear,put it down to no filter...

Slides will wear but a bit of spit back will lubricate the slide.2yrs isn't that bad.
