would machining the ex port to std thickness be an option?i know its a bit harsh but it would standardise things....has anyone done this?

I had another look at fitting the JL3 today, by the look of it the pipe needs to be about 10mm lower down like donnie said and that relates to how much deeper the mugello exhaust flange is.
I have an exhaust hanger from an old ScootRS exhaust which has plenty of meat in all directions, so I think if I fit that then line up the pipe with the stub and the tail can fixings, I can then drill the ScootRS hanger in the right place and I should be in business.
The tail can fixings will need "adjusting" slightly but thats no biggy.

@ camel I thought about that as well ,but apparently its a design feature to help performance.

When this design feature was thought of and implemented... what exhaust did they have in mind the customer(s) using? There MUST be one, surely??

I don't think they had any pipe in mind, I would have thought any box pipe would be a bugger to fit.
I spoke to CambLamb about it and their way of doing it was to fit the whole pipe with all nuts/bolts loose then just tighten everything bit by bit until its forced to fit. That doesn't sound like a good idea to me as it will stress the pipe and maybe lead to cracking. :?

Agreed it's a brand new pipe but it won't be after the first 20 miles when the header paint burns off so go the easy route and cut the stubs ;)

CPH Lambretta wrote:I contacted Charlie Edmunds about this Mugello problem I'm having and he told me that the extra 10mm at the exhaust port is a design feature to aid gas flow and cooling and all the Mugellos have been this way for the last 4 years.
Emailed Jim Lomas about it as well and he said he'd never heard of a problem.
Jim must have forgotten sending me a specially modified exhaust bracket, free of charge from the Czech Republic and all the emails we exchanged then..... I had this a couple of years ago and a gentleman on the LCGB forum mentioned the issue lies with the Mugello barrel casting.
I must say I never considered it a design feature though

At least they have more meat for the studs to screw into :frog:
I had the same on a standard JL, I decided to sell it rather than butcher it, then bought a snail, that fitted better but does hang low, I took about 5 mm of the stub and the pipe to get the side brackets to fit as they should. I also spent a bit of time filing the face of the stub as it seems to kick forward a few degrees pushing the back end down.
I must say that the ancilotti with the split u pipe fitted a treat, and I'm sure thats why they have the split pipe. The JL has given me far more revs so stick with it
