Arrow points down towards the exhaust port. Stops your rings popping out into the exhaust port and maybe a touch handy lining up the ports on the piston to the ports on the barrel.

thanks mate thats the way ive put it in but got thrown because there is a letter A in marker pen on the top of the cylinder
