I'm always in favour of making good what you've already got, or using something else you have about; comes from having no money to throw at a problem...

if the lever doesn't stay "on", take it apart and dremmel a little notch for the pin to sit in [having checked the pin is good of course].

Make your own choke cable to exactly the length needed by unsoldering the nipple, and either cutting the cable and outer and resoldering [done that on TS1s before], or using eg a trimmed old throttle cable if more is required [done that to run a choke cable up and over LR tank/toolbox combo and straight down into the carb]
