I didn't think the kickstart spring looked right either but according to Sticky's the kinked end goes in the shaft. I took that to mean the end that has a straight bit

Other than it definitely not being the cable adjustment, or reach of the lever, I'm not sure what it was in the end, but I now have an operational clutch
.
I suspect either bending up the ears of the bottom cork plate, or possibly the kickstart spring being the wrong way round
