I think it's the fact that the marbles displace the volume of paint that would otherwise be left in the bottom.

I put golf balls in my toilet cistern so it won't use so much water when i flush it LOL

I wouldn't advise either for spraying.

maybe he missed using rattle cans so chucked em it so the gun rattled while sprayed

putting marbles/ball bearings in is supposed to aggitate the paint to keep it mixed thoroughly!
