Yamaha R1 rear shock

i bought one of ebay about a year ago, it came with the bronze bushes and spring to suit lambretta ( approx 180 lbs) , waste of money , the spindle snapped at the top after a couple of weeks , the same thing has happened to a few others in our club. not only that they weigh a ton also. one snapped on a club member while he was flying along he was very lucky not to have got thrown off , ive known of other scooter shocks not lasting very long and the damper giving up but at least the spring keeps it in one piece , never heard of a purpose made lambreta shock snapping.

i thought the r1 shocks would breake if you over tightend the shock nuts ....and should use nylock half nuts instead so it will mone on the mounts

Sounds like the problem with shocks breaking is the sideways loads that they are being subjected to, this is minimised by allowing the shock to move on it's mounts but at the end of the day the shock is having to cope with being attached to what is in effect a rubber mounted swingarm. A way of addressing this maybe to have a shock built with a rose joint at either end that would have zero vertical movement on it's mounts and have lateral play though the rose joint to allow for the engine movment under torsional loads. Some motorcycle shocks have these fittings at either end to allow small amounts of movement, so any torsional stresses transmitted don't effect the damping characteristics of the shock by finding there way to the damper rod.

Or you could always replace the engine mount rubbers with something solid ! and watch the scooter fall to bits around you.
