Nylon rope with a knot in it just big enough to fit through the spark plug hole. I've used this trick many times on the road side and it always works.

I'm guessing this a joke about a chain letting loose and bunching up at the crank sprocket....

What a bodge, but making the most of the equipment on offer! why do you need one? If the stator goes down you'll need to strobe up the new one anyway? esp with a retard box?

You can be pretty accurate by marking and lining up the pickup marks by scribing on the mag housing if using a like for like stator, I just did it with a BGM and checked the timing with a strobe, it was spot on.

swapping a BGM for a BGM should be fine as they are sposed to be accurate. Obviously your going to carry one- they're often hard to get when you need them most (like in the middle of derby)

I'd end up with a very light flywheel if I tried that.
