Nylon rope with a knot in it just big enough to fit through the spark plug hole. I've used this trick many times on the road side and it always works.

how would a chain lock your flywheel?

I'm guessing this a joke about a chain letting loose and bunching up at the crank sprocket....

What a bodge, but making the most of the equipment on offer! why do you need one? If the stator goes down you'll need to strobe up the new one anyway? esp with a retard box?

You can be pretty accurate by marking and lining up the pickup marks by scribing on the mag housing if using a like for like stator, I just did it with a BGM and checked the timing with a strobe, it was spot on.

swapping a BGM for a BGM should be fine as they are sposed to be accurate. Obviously your going to carry one- they're often hard to get when you need them most (like in the middle of derby)

I'd end up with a very light flywheel if I tried that.

No its not a ping pong bat, it's my new prototype Pat Pending two window flywheel holding tool. Knocked up in the workshop yesterday lunchtime, and used for the first time last night to tighten my Injun flywheel. Worked perfectly, and will fit nicely in my standard toobox.

Here's one I made a few years ago to fit a three window flywheel. It also doubles as a clutch compressor. Fits a legshield toolbox, but not the standard toolbox. You could always stick it in with yer tent poles when going on a rally.
