There is always some confusion between builders/plumbers silicone sealer and automotive silicone sealant. You need to get some of the latter I use Loctite 5910 and there are others equally as good, threebond for example.

There are very few truly fuel resistant sealants, done my time in a shop enviro, flushing blue slime out of carb jets. We use Loctite 5922 paste on fuel senders, which is rated fuel resistant & pretty much an industry standard bodge.
If you'd rather do the job proper like, buy a sheet of 1.5mm nitrile bonded cork, nick your missus nail scissors & cut yourself a simple gasket that's guaranteed to seal & not dissolve into your fuel. Alternatively you can also use 1.5mm Viton rubber sheet. Do it right, do it once ;)

Hylomar is excellent to smear on gaskets or replace them on precision joints but not sealing a fuel tanks or not so good joints.

In a past life I worked for a company that made re-fueling riggs for the F1 industry. We found NO silicone that was truly petrol resistant, in a sheet form or liquid. It would always breakdown, go soft and fail. We would also use good old cork or nitrile sheet, and where possible we would joint with nitrile O rings.
