i broke my kickstart shaft at Hayling Island this weekend,i bought a new "Italian" made one as opposed to an Indian one ,fitted it on site but it jams against the clutch top plate and the kick start doesnt return to the start position unless you pull it up by hand. i used a expanding wine bottle stopper to plug the hole up to get home, worked a treat. :D
Now i know i can machine down the crank casing and fit shims outside against the pedal but what i want to know is , are GP shafts different to other series 3 shafts ,ie in length ?

The GP one is about 2mm shorter in the length of the shaft to compensate for a thicker web. the new shaft replaced the Li type as a service replacement at the end of the 60's and Lambretta provided their dealers with a tool for machining the required 2mm off the inner end of the kickstart shaft bearing in the crankcase cover. It's possible that yours has never been converted (assuming it's not a GP). I would have thought that the indian ones would be as per GP spec?

I recently fitted a Tino remade kickstart shaft and it seemed to be a reasonable quality item.
