here is the correct way to assemble the gearbox.
1. top gear (smallest) with its boss toward you
2.third boss down towards hub
3.second boss down again
4.ratchet upwards
simple as 'hoop la'

Fair comment, I was going from what I'd read in Stiky's book where he says make sure the slotted sides do not face each other, but you do need to start with the 4th gear with the flat side towads the bearing.Ian Hepworth wrote:It does matter which way each gear goes round. If you have one the wrong way round you won't be able to select that gear as it will jump straight out of gear.
Either way, it seems a likely reasin for the problem

Just for info:- Assembled a gearbox with 4th gear wrong way round and kept jumping out of 3rd gear. So as Joespeed says, there IS a right and wrong way to assemble a gearbox. I can never remember so I use the Home Workshop Manual description which, for me, is a little clearer.
NO IT'S NOT A F***IN* MOPED!!!!!!
