Purpose of electric start safety interlock

It's the "PRD" relay, it's sole purpose is to make sure the starter circuit is inoperable when the engine is already running.

Ah ha..makes perfect sense..thanks for explaining it, after years working on scooters I've not paid this little bugger any attention at all, until a mate came round with intermittent electric start problems, I traced the circuitry back to this PRD unit and simply wondered what it was.

The fault turned out to be a flaky ignition switch, the contacts for the electric start circuit needed cleaning up and..voila ..a working electric Start ..every time..
