My Sx gearbox is starting to annoy me..... the gear cluster mullered the bearing in the casing, so I had to strip the whole thing down and clean all the bits out....

When I put it back together the loose gears and cluster will mesh nicely and spin freely....

But as soon as I fit the endplate, even loosely, a tight spot is apparent... And when the plate is fully tightened, it's worse..

New bearings all around, shims in right place, under gear cluster etc... Even does it with a different endplate, but with no bearing in the backplate, it all spins merrily... Now I'm no expert on gearboxes, so wassup?

Put the rear hub on and torque up correctly. .if it still locks up it's possible that you need to re shim first gear..also make sure the crown wheel and spider are fitted and the centre nut is tight .

New rear axle bearing? If so then this could give you a different first gear shim tolerance

Build it up without the first gear shim in and see if it spins freely

when you say a tight spot, do you mean it turns and then goes tight, then loose again

if so then surely something is either bent, or a gear isnt sitting central?
heavy is good, heavy is reliable, and if it does fail, hit them with it!!!

tony

yes, that's exactly what I mean.....

thought it strange that the gear cluster mullered the bearing in the housing... so maybe that's the issue..

also, on closer inspection, one of the gear teeth is chipped... :-(

Did you do this bit too...
