SIP Speedo for a change
Bought the sip speedo for my lammy at a rally , spur of the moment thing. Now confused as to what exactly I need so I don't have to use a cable to see what speed I am doing. No point in buying it to run off a cable. What exactly do I need to buy to get this ( an idiot proof to sips site and actual magnet/pickup device would be useful) I have read through various topics and the instruction book and realise I now have to shell out for more bits but if I have them all , it's a start, then I can have fun with the set up. Between this , jockey boxershort back brake and cyclone gearbox I am starting to get a trifle annoyed verging towards being slightly vexed.

I'm just setting mine up too. You'll need a speed sensor (about £25) at least 1 magnet and a bracket (either home made or bought) to hold the sensor.
Beedspeed sell all the above for the sip speedo in the lambretta headset section of their site.
What confused me (quites easy to do so really
) is that in the instructions it tells you to measure the circumference of your tyre and input it in mm, which is fine, but it doesn't mention anything about the value you have to input after that.
This value relates to how many magnets/pick ups you have. 01 for one magnet and so on. The more magnets the better refresh rate on the speedo. Each magnet/pickup has to be spaced evenly if using more than 1. Seems simple but with no instruction on this i was scratching my head as to why when i was spinning the wheel as fast as i could, i could only get it to read 3mph!

Why not run I off a speedo cable, after all many modern scooters still do? If you have goos quality components fitted correctly there shouldn't be an issue. Did you not get the manual, it's all in there. Of note check here...

Oh FFS, brackets , magnets , sensors , looks like another £40 bucks. Ah well. Soulsurfer , do you have a link to that info you have posted below , the pics look ideal for setting up but can't make them out too clearly. Wasn't wanting to run off a cable as my latest set up lasted 350 miles, will eventually fit a metal drive to run the cable as well once I find out how you change the drive on a billet wheel, but thought the sip speedo was a plug and go.

ok all other bits now bought , I was advised to put an inline fuse into the set up , any advice on what size fuse to use. I got some magnets , why don't you need to use them?
I run mine off speedo cable Italian , I bought all the sip sensor stuff etc magnet and bracket never used it cable worked fine until now . I've just fitted drop bars and now all of a sudden it's stopped working

You could get a "passive" sensor which did need a magnet, but I believe that SIP only supply the active version.
The sensor on my setup senses the rear wheel studs, no magnets involved.

A scoot shop/dealer fitted my mates (running off AC), and they put a 5amp fuse inline between AC power supply (usually brown wire) and the black power box. Unfortunately, his speedo stopped working after a few months on AC (we've tried everything to fix), though will work on DC?!immylam wrote:I was advised to put an inline fuse into the set up , any advice on what size fuse to use
SIP suggested sending black box back to them (as they think maybe faulty/damaged), but I think he's just going to buy a new (black box).There's nothing in the installation manual, or in Stickys article in Scootering, about needing an in-line fuse when running off AC - (i'm sure I read somewhere that the black power box almost acts as a fuse, to protect the speedo), though I can't see what harm it would do to fit one (though its one more thing to try and cram inside your headset), and may save a blown speedo/black box (though it didn't seem to help my mate).
