Now I have got the indicators working ( thanks all ) attention turns the the fuel gauge that has stopped working.
Is this common ?, and standard things to look for ?

It could be a stuck float or once again a dodgy electrical connection. Check the connection on the sender unit on the top of the fuel tank and on the back of the speedo unit.

Different sender unit likely, probably could interchange it with a standard PX one. Best look for a good s cond hand one as they're pricey new.
