LML Disc Brake - Speedo cable Retaining plate?

Hello there,

I was hoping to get some advice concerning the LML Disc Brake with the standard looking hub. I recently got a new speedo cable on a resto of a Vespa 160 (Spanish). Part of the resto involved the bottom half of an LML Disc Brake being welded onto the original forks. This was done by Harry Barlow. I've got to the point in the rebuild where i'm running the cable up through the fork inner to connect with the speedo at the top end, and also fitting the cable into the drive at the bottom end - (the cable inner does turn when the wheel is rotated.)

My question is this. How is the cable retained in the drive itself without it slipping out? In the Haynes manual it talks about a retaining plate which is slipped onto the outer cable before the rubber grommet, and the plate is then bolted down into a pre drilled hole near the speedo drive entrance itself. Thats on a PX Disc model. However on an LML Disc brake there doesn't seem to be a pre drilled hole for a retaining plate to bolt into. So is it just the case of pushing the outer/inner cable into the rubber bung and pushing the bung into the hole above the speedo drive mechanism, or am i missing something?

The LML type is an angled plate that bolts through the bottom shock bolt.

The retaining plate is usually not bent at a sufficient angle and puts undue pressure on the cable just above where it enters the drive causing premature failure. Bend the bracket so when fully bolted down, it sits flush to the face where the cable enter the caliper carrier / back plate.

Shouldn't have any problems but as Ducksta says it's a PITA....
