1986 T5 rear hub oil seal conundrum

just bought myself a T5 mk1. D plate metallic black, no rot! yeah!
the rear hub was a tad loose. loads of oil and crap in there. could running the loose hub be the cause or is it likely the dreaded rear seal?.
cleaned it up and it looks all good, there's a great big bloody circlip just before the seal/?bearing?. is the T5 an internal oil seal? needing a gearbox out or will it replace from the hub side like an early PX?
is the rear hub specific to the T5 like the front hub? :?

EFL style so internal seal. Hubs are per PX so I'm guessing you mean backplate with knurled adjusters. You might be lucky and the hub just needed a tighten up.

ahhh was hoping it might be done externally. i wonder if running it with a loose hub allowed oil and dirt build up inside the hub.
<does this look right and unmolested? should there be any dust cap in T5 ???

If it has an internal seal, then there should be a tiny hole in the case underneath close to the bearing. Block that up, then fit an external seal (27 or 30mm to suit your hub) into the case on the outside of the circlip. Job's right.

If the hub has been loose for a while however, it's probably had it and the splines will be worn out.
