I've got one of my engines in bits at the moment and am toying with the ideal of upgearing it, more just for the sake of tinkering than anything else.

It's a Harry Barlow stage 4 with a Sip road 2 so currently it has bags of torque all through the rev range in all gears. Was thinking of upgrading the primary for something like this;

or even a 24/63 upgear kit. I've got a couple of exhausts to try as well as the Sip road 2 as well (Revolver RHS).

Worth it or not? Anybody else done this or do I need a beefier kit to pull the higher gearing? Would be interested to hear from anyone who's done it, good or bad.

I'm running 24/63 up-gear kits on 2 different kitted p2 motors - ones a reed polini 221 & the others a reed malossi 221.
On the malossi I've had to swap the standard 4th for a 36t cog as it struggled to get into the power in 4th (even with 31hp & 23lb/ft)... but the lower revving polini kitted motor can pull the standard 35t 4th no bother at all...

carmel808, can I ask if the polini is the new ish 221 kit used with a 60mm crank?I got that set up and think that my crank is messing up the induction of fuel before to power peaks.Which crank are you using with it mate.Sorry a bit off topic but i'm running 64/23 gearing with a longer 3rd and t5 forth ,final drive ratio 4.74-1 pulls gret when in the power band.

cheers Jeff

Yes - its the latest 221 kit & I'm running a scooter & service bell crank (reed valve)... rest of set-up is delly 30mm vhsh carb, vforce 4 reeds, pinasco flytech ignition, scooter & service pipe.

Ok thanks for the reply, I've got nearly the same set up with a bell crank and a phbh 30 carb. Where yours is different is the pipe, reeds, and ignition. I be got static ignition , an rd350 reed and an RZ right hand pipe, it has a bit of a flat spot between 4600-5400 ish . Thought it was due to the low crankcase compression caused by the crank and it maybe that! Do you have the s&s new line pipe and does it cut in early on in the rev range?

Yes it's a Newline L/H.... comes onto pipe @ just over 3k and then peaks @ around 7k... exhaust port has been tweaked slightly to allow it to rev on a little more

I think that is the main difference.What did you do with the exhaust port altogether?

It was slightly widened... nothing drastic - only around 1mm in total & this was mor to accommodate the liger gearing than anything else...

Thanks for that Carmel808, can you use a centre stand with the scoot and service pipe?

Cheers Jeff
