Thought I had got this right
skimmed all the fins off a Knackered tv 200 head centre drilled it, and attached to face plate to find 4 stud hole postions
using 40mm barrell nuts double locked on studs acting as adjusters and for the head to rest onto with the outside 4 studs to pull head down, can clock the outside face in quickly and accurately
slight mod allows me to do small block heads as in below picture
however am cheesed off, the head is not accurately centred enough to open up the diameter of the head and have no adjustments to get it right other than tapping with a mallet using slack betwen barrell and studs
what do other people do,
still want to be able to clock outside face in, seem too many pissed skimmed heads
Clocked in but not Central please help

I always used a four jaw chuck, this will let you move it about centrally..
The mandrel I used was a length of pipe welded to a plate, all then machined flat and square, four threaded bolts are loosely fitted into four pre drilled holes, the head stud holes are then tapped and the four bolts now fitted with spacers bolt the head to the mandrel, fit the head & mandrel into a four jaw chuck and center then square it up a little if needed and re tighten the jaws...
I only ever did one offs and just when needed, i no longer machine anything as I have no access to a lathe, but this is to give an idea how the uneducated like myself went about it...
