Were they originally chromed or zinced? Opinions vary.
I always thought it was a dull looking Chromed finish... not Zinc..!!

Well, I must admit I thought the same, but it's just difficult to tell sometimes. The chroming they do nowadays is probably much too bright and shiny and what I take to be original does look dull and rough by comparison. That of course may be due to the surface on which it was applied instead of being polished. It does look a bit zincey, and possibly this is where the confusion arises?

They are flash chromed ,as against show chromed
Slow is the new fast!
They are chromed but not polished first. Which makes a durable but not very nice looking finish..

I had a set done a few years ago and the plater described it as "hard chromed", they came out a satin finish - I don't know the differences in the process but the finish was near as dammit original - the particular platers is long gone otherwise I'd give them a bell but it can be done.

Yes, that's exactly the sort of thing I want. I've taken a pair of fork links into the chromers today and we talked about it. The one is in its original finish, while the other is nice and shiny. Or at least what is left of the chrome is. That's the polished one. Obviously not a pair, but by lightly blasting the polished one they say they can achieve an overall finish. Not cheap, but then disc links don't grow on trees.
