Anyone tell me what size the bolt is that fixes the exhaust into the underneath of the crankcase?

permacoil, helicoil, timecert or weld and retap.

Coils are easy to install (most of the time) and are cheap compared to welding. If done correctly it will be stronger than original since now it will have steel threads instead of aluminium ones. Repair kits usually run about $20-$30 and come complete with tap, coils and installing tool.

be careful though, can't tell you how many engines I've seen over years where someone has used a bolt thats too long.

Just fitted the BGM big box and they told me this fixing point is essential. Fortunately I have the right size helicoil kit

Just fitted a new exhaust today, and whoever fitted the previous one did bolt it there.

I must have wiggled and tapped and wiggled and clouted it for 5 minutes before I realised

Yes, but I've fitted exhausts which have the extra bracket but it in no way lines up with that lug of ally on the bottom of the casing
