Stator problem or not?

There is a long story behind this, which I won't bore you with as I doubt it would make a difference to the answer, so I'll cut to the chase.

Scoot runs fine for 30miles or so then starts to misfire , get's worse gradually then dies... I think "Stator Problem" so leave it to cool for a while, try again 20 minutes later with no joy. For some reason (desperation?), I disconnect the ignition green, it starts and runs perfectly for the next 80 miles...

It now starts with the ignition circuit connected up but I suspect that the same symptoms will return in 30 miles or so and will hopefully get to test that theory later today, in the meantime I would be gratefull for any theories since my electrical knowledge is a little limited to say the least...

Most likely the CDI unit or bad earth... or even Possibly the LT coil failing.... Check all the earths and electrical connectors, It could be shorting out between the green to headset from coil/CDI possibly... if its not this then Try changing the CDI/Coil for one you know that works if that doesn't cure it... its possible the stator needs repairing... then try locally with your nearest reputable dealer for a fix... if you get no joy, PM me and I will try to help.... All the best 8-)

PS this is only if it turnes out to be the electrics and not some other fault that you havnt found yet...

If its points then plug gap, points gap, or dirty points, Coil failing or condensor..

If when you disconnected the ignition switch wire it started straight away I'd be more inclined to look there for the fault. Measure the ignition green to pink on a multimeter on a high ohms scale, with the key in the on position it should read infinity.

Thanks Jims, I should have said that I got a new Ducati CDI unit and HT Lead, Cap and Plug and it's actually worse with the new CDI unit, it sounds like it's almost fourstroking....I've put the old one back on, I suppose it's possible that the new one is faulty though.

Firekdp, it just has a cut out button, what should I measure?

I had the same thing - eventually wouldn't start - it was the LT coil.

The cut out button would be my first suspect they are quite ofte the reason for a non starter whether points or CDI...

Connect the multimeter between the wire from the CDI (disconnected) to earth, this will check the entire cut out system.

If I understand correctly then I switch the multimeter to the section with the letter Omega and measure, answer comes out as 1 whether I use the 200 ohm setting or the 2000k ohm setting, is this the answer I want?

Not really as this proves your cut circuit is OK and starting when the wire removed was coincidence and the problem is probably within the stator.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't coincidence, will test it tomorrow and see if I can duplicate the problem, in the meantime I'll get a new stator anyway, I've been looking for an excuse to get a 120W stator...
