i bought a set of lambretta grips from ebay :? fitted them onto the jet, and they appear to be a good 1/4 inch short! were the jet grips longer or are these shoddy grips?

They might be cr@p or they might just need leaving in hot water for a while to get them good and soft before fitting. That way they stretch. Use hairspray as lube as it is good and slippy but turns into glue once set

Jet grips are the same size as Italian ones, so sounds like you have duff ones there!
