If it was starting normally and just started playing up I would clean out the pilot jet circuit, also worth checking the choke cable for wear or the nipple breaking off.
If it is a new build I would check your ignition timing, my 185 rebuild was a pig to start and I, like you had to cover the carb mouth to get it started. Turns out even though the timing marks were correct when I strobed it up the timing was way out. Strobed timing to 18 degrees and it starts 1st or 2nd kick every time.
