scenario:-

scooter laid up a couple of years ago, but started regularly every 6 weeks or so

ran scooter recently then decided to degrease all the engine and electrics, so sprayed with "Gunk"

Scooter then refuses to start apart from the odd backfire

Have changed the fuel tap as this wasn't turning off, and have thoroughly cleaned the carb out as the fuel was "iffy". Fuel changed for fresh at 3%

Still won't start

I have a nice fat spark

Any ideas before I use the remaining new fuel to burn it??

Spraying with "Gunk" could be coincidental. Sheared woodruff key would be worth looking at.

thanks Mick- thats the thought I'm coming round to. In over 50 years of scootering its never happened before but I suppose there's always a first time.

I am sure you will have tried this already Chris, but just in case, have you tried to start using 'easy start'?

I've given it a go Martin but with no luck- I am coming round to the fact that its timing related i.e. the flywheel has slipped if the key has gone. Unusual though as it happened after I used the gunk but may be as Mick says, it could be coincidence.

thinking about it- when it started "not starting", it was kicking back really strongly on the K/S- something its never done before. That in my opinion suggests well over advanced timing. Its not kicked back since, but now occasionally backfires badly, which suggests well retarded. The indications are that the F/W has moved, but I can't prove or disprove until I get it apart.

Can anyone agree with the kicking back and backfiring?

thanks

If you kick it over (not the actual scooter) & the woodruff key is shot the FW won’t turn in situ with the KS.

Did you re-lap the taper of the flywheel/crank? If the flywheel was torqued correctly it is the taper that holds it, not the Woodruff key. The key is only there to locate the flywheel in the correct position.
