Their is no difference between series 2 and series 3 engines, the difference is between engine covers.I have a series 2 engine with a series 3 engine cover in a series 2 frame,I use a series 3 (305mm) rear shocker because the series 2 shocker makes the carb manifold sit to high and hits the frame,it seems to ride ok and I've done hundreds of miles with it like that.300mm is also the length of a series 3 shock,it just happens that I had a 305mm shock on the shelf so i used that.By the way,if you use a series 3 engine cover in a series 2 frame make sure you use a kickstart to fit.

some series 3 spanish engine cases are different and you'll need a 310mm shock with it and if your frame is not spanish you'll need a spacer as the frame/engine mounts are different roughly 10mm difference

Well I always thought it was the front fork links on a seires 2 have a different curve to a seires 3 fork links equating to the 10mm difference in shock length
