Regarding the heavy clutch action, what sort of lever are you using? The reason I ask is that some none original levers have the anchor point for the cable too far from the pivot point which has the effect of increasing the pressure required to operate it. I found this out last weekend when I fitted a doglegged lever to mine and went from a very light lever to a very heavy one. I only changed it to match the hydraulic brake

The harder the pencil lead, the more abrasive it contains (what makes it hard) - if that is your only source of graphite, then get the softest pencil you can, 6B.

Old school locksmiths used to use graphite powder on lock mechanisms because it doesn't gum up the works with stickiness attracting dust and wear particles.

Good point to check. Pattern ball ends fitted. These helped on mine though over my pointed end originals as I could place palm of hand over ends to help pull in. Think it could be the springs. Now got a set of Camlam's advertised as 'Ultimate uprated Springs', to try.
