Has anyone ever removed the rear shock stud from the engine casing before?

No but I think I know we're your coming from.... If it's because your shock bush moves a bit on there like mine does it's probably best to build up by welding then "machine" back down to the correct diameter ( my angle grinder being my machine).

The stud is fine, it's removal to.allownthe case to go through some chemical tanks and there shouldn't be any steel.. just checking it it's a push out with a press job or a right PITA.

Yes, it sucks. You need to get the case very hot and then figure out a way to press it out. Really only done if you are going to do something silly chrome the case or it's damaged beyond repair.

I think when I removed one I made up a puller and drew it out of the case. Be careful though, some are flared out on the back and can crack the shock mount when you try to remove it. Turning your case in to recycling.

For all the trouble and possible damage it might cause wouldn't it be wiser to forget about dipping it in chemicals and try something like an ultra sonic bath, or some form of blasting?

It's for anodising.. it's perfectly clean at the moment
