Can any of the electrical guru's recommend a suitable power source for testing the electrics on the scooter instead of starting it up and gassing myself in the shed?

I d use either a small alarm type battery, a car battery or a car battery charger if mains power is available. Just make sure you connect an in line fuse to your test lead, 5 amp should do it 8-)

as above, small 12v alarm battery or car battery, 5-10 amp inline "blade" fuse, connect earth to scooter frame and positive to 12v supply on loom (disconnect from regulator first) only thing that wont work is a 12 AC horn, but you will get a "click" when you press the button when it's wired up right

I've used one of the ac 230v-12v lighting transformers (under £4 from Toolstation, probably cheaper if you get it off the internet). Gives you ac so will also test if your rectifier is working (if you're using dc).

Could I connect one of these to the scoot (negative to frame and positive to loom)? or am I being stupid?

It MIGHT work diesel but automatic chargers often need a load in order for them to output any voltage. Simple charger will work but might not have enough capacity to power a headlamp. Personally I'd go for a 12v 7 Amp ph alarm battery although you will still need the means to charge it from time to time

Fit an inline fuse in the positive lead of the battery.
