erratic tacho reading

ive got an acewell 2856 speedo fitted to my series 2. its been working great for about 3 years but its suddenly developed a fault with the tacho. it is reading way too high. ie ticking over at 5000rpm. anyone have any ideas what could have happened? ive tried altering all the settings for the tacho but it shunts the readings even higher.

Mines always been erratic on tick over with a Varitronic but fine once moving. The instructions say add a 1k Ohm resistor in series if the readings are false,or try Quadtech for advise.
