am building an engine that requires a gp crank with a 116 rod, i see plenty of cheap SIL cranks on ebay, my question is how feasable is building my own race crank? do the webs need machining for big end shims and any suggestions for con rods, ive got a tame engineer with a press btw

Depends on what motor it's for. Most rods are 115mm but AF's do an RB rod 116 long that may not need the webs machining but it's pricey. Most Jap rods need the webs doing if you want to use big end shims. Unless your mate has done cranks it would be better to buy one already done or send the parts to someone who does them.
I would get in touch with Harry Barlow at ProPorting in Leicester if I were you - 0116 287 1285
He's supplying cranks to many of the dealers and tuning guys.
I'm sure he'll be able to help with advice and the parts or complete crank too if you need it.
He's a very nice fella and charges buttons in comparison to many of the others.
