Right, back from the shed...........
as you can see the standard R1 collar fits the standard R1 top suspension mount fine.......




But look at the potential side to side movement that is created by the fitting of the smaller spring. These two shots show the movement present in the top collar. Exactly the same movement is possible in the lower plastic collar too. Its approx 10 mm in total, i.e. 5 mm either way. This was with a 225 spring so i would imagine that those with a 180 lb spring have even more possible side to side movement !!






I'm also now convinced that there isn't sufficient room to accomodate a pressed rubber bush into the standard R1 top and lower mounts - there looks to be approx one ot two mill available......
So is this just unlucky? I previously have been recommending these to mates......what now?

Dazza - yes it was over that weekend but i never knew until later so i doubt you would have known.
Anymore info on this other failure ..........was it in the same place, brass or ptfe bushes, 225 or 180 spring etc?

not sure how it was mounted but it looked like the rod had snapped
I did hear a few people voiceing their concern about the lack of rubber on the mount.

I only fitted mine over the escorts one because it was slightly shorter , if I get rid of the r1 I'll need to fit the shortest shock- anyone know what this is?

chiggy had some r1 and r6 shockers at cleethorpes ,i was a little concerned as he told me that he didn't want to press the bushes in as they were a barsteward to get out to change from bronze to nylon,that means when tightened up they keep bending the piston rod so they eventually snap,that is what has happened ,the lambretta damper has a rubber bush which allows a little movement,
the r1 style bushes needs to be relieved so the shocker can swing on the pivot to avoid the bending action,

its not rubbing ,it is pressed in tight!

even worse if its brass bush rubbing against steel shock mount . they have rubber for a reason . they can only rotate on the shock mount if left slightly loose. as we all know when you tighten up the nut and washer it goes against the bush therefore locking it into position

i still think the spring movement is dangerous as well if it moves forward at the bottom and backwards at the top that spring is putting added stress on an already stressed bolt when compressed .

Thinking about this, if there were a thin metal tube that acted as a spacer and used in conjunction with the nylon/ptfe bushes, when the nut is tightened the mounts should still be able to pivot on the bush.
Problem solved?
