The play is worse than any of the cranks I have, but how would induce almost impossible starting and spluttery revs when it ran for a few seconds?

What type of tank to carb fuel pipe do you use?Did you change it when changing everything else?I had a similar problem to you,after trying all else swapped the fuel pipe.Hey presto that cured it.I believe the pipe was porous pulling air thru with the fuel.

I've had 2 different types of fuel hose.
