I hope you replaced the steels as well.
I spent a while cleaning up the steels with wire wool and compared them with a spare set. I could not see any difference, no warping etc. so put them back in.

You were right GoldenEye, I didn't replace the steels and the clutch never worked correctly. Always biting and never releasing properly. I put that problem to one side as I've been converting the scoot to a Group 6 style racer with drop bars. Inspired by many of the scoots on this site.

After getting the Beedspeed gear change, brakes and some lights working I replaced the clutch steels this evening and it's working fine. The old ones from the burnt clutch were black and I originally assumed that was all but when I lay them on top of one another this evening and looked carefully they were warped. Just had a mad run round the block in a t-shirt as a first run.
