Any ideas what would cause this? (Excuse the poor focus).

The short rubber "mud flap" appears to have melted. I noticed the dark marking the other day and assumed it was some kind of grease but after a run up to London and back (35 miles each way) it ctualyy seems to have actualy melted. I've had some work done recently on the engine - new cank, seals, new 30mm carb - and it seems to be running hotter (cowling too hot to touch) but surely not this hot! Thoughts?

I would say, after reading all about the rebuild and seals you have done.
My main concern is the new 30mm carb, I think this is where the problem stem from



In my experience and opinion, I think you have creased the mudflap up and inwards, by lifting the scooter by the rear end, or just backing into something and folded the flap up and in on the tyre.
Then the new found power from the 30mm carb has seen the flap subjected to extreme speed and heat whilst rubbing on the tread before becoming supple and falling down again.

Did you park outside that walkie talkie building?

Was the flap on before the engine rebuild? Something nasty spill onto the flap maybe.

Did you fit a fluffer-valve during the rebuild? This can sometimes lead to rubber-turbulence on the nearside deflector shield.......hence the mudflap deterioration. Try fitting an antimatter stabiliser to rectify this.



Or just remove the mudflap.

Had the very same thing happen to both mine and my mates GP's on the way to the eurolambretta this year, it was baking hot so guess the flap got very hot and more flexible than usual and got sucked into the tyre... strange eh!
