There could be damage around the bearing home but with out a photo it's just a guess. Typically the case is not clean enough to allow the bearing to drop right in. Remember bearings are an interference fit which means there is no space between the two surfaces.
For the drive bearing you should get the case plenty hot, no need to freeze the bearing (it's a waste of time and and can add moisture between the bearing and case).
What I typically do is set my propane torch aimed at the case where the bearing goes and let it cook for about 7-10 min. Remove torch and carefully insert a slightly oiled bearing. Keep it nice and level it should drop right in. No pounding on it. For the drive side it helps to have a bearing holder (big handled screwdriver helps) so you can guide it in to place.

Yes, what Grumpy says, I had exactly the same trouble last week, froze bearinbg andf heated the case. Managed to drift it in eventually after a few false starts but from what Grumpy said, I didn't give it anywhere near enough heat.

I use one of Rich Presleys bearing fitting tools, not cheap but given how versatile it is and how many times I've used it then it's been an absolute bargain.

You don't need as much heat plus I don't like hitting bearings with punches.
