indian headset ?

I've read that earlier indian gp sometimes have old stock italian headsets I want to get a new gearchange for a 78 model am I safe in saying it should be ok to just order an indian one without removing it first to check.

what you have is Italian style lever supports (same as every other series 3 in diameter where they meet head set) the later type are visibly larger and are based on the series 2 type

Pull back the light switch housing or the gear change housing and measure the thickness where it butts up, Italian is about 34mm, Indian about 37mm.

As a quick guide, the outside dimension of the gear change housing where it meets the headset is approx 38mm on an Italian style and approx 42 on the latter Indian style. My 78 GP has the thinner type.
