my brake shoes seem to have survived and appear to be grease free, I'll try them out once I've changed that seal.

I always spend time fettling the shoes before i fit them. A nice chamfer on the leading edge etc, but the quality of shoes available now seem to be awfull.

OMO - there was a bag lady in the town where i grew up we used to call Omo.

You're not wrong -didn't a certain sub-zero friend of ours blow up her toilet with a fertiliser/aerosol bomb

Those were the days.

i just done mine too but along with the dishwasher tablet ive learnt to put a fairy non bio tablet in as well, when i furst did it i had to put the dishwasher on several intencive washes with nothing in it and various detergents, needless to say washing up liquid was the most hilarious with foam all over the kitchen

I have since done my engine casing, side & mag housing in the dishwasher. came out ok, albeit with a little post dishwasher haze about it. I think I got away with it.

to answer my original question, I have also since tried brake cleaner spray, which was actually pretty good at cleaning brake shoes... who'd have thought it...
