Preserving original paintwork?

Just bought a Lambretta 125 Special in original paint.
Apparently it's had quite a rough ride in the last forty years and the paintwork has several bad spots.
What would be the best way to preserve as much as possible of what is left from the original paintwork, and stop the rust advancing where the paintwork is gone/damaged?
I would prefer to stay away from the common rust treatment products because most of them they turn into black spots where there was rust.
I know there've been some threads about this, but for the life of me can't find anything...

Ankor Wax
Ankor Wax is a special solvent deposited, long term corrosion preventative, having low viscosity and surface tension thereby enabling it to spread rapidly, penetrating into all inaccessible areas and covering all surfaces however irregular. It dries to leave a continuous firm wax protective coating that imparts excellent corrosion protection properties. Ankor Wax has de-watering properties and therefore can be used where the metal parts to be treated are wet. All traces of water are displaced before the protective film is applied. Ankor Wax is effective in damp and humid climates and gives excellent protection against salt spray.

Applications
Ankor Wax is recommended for medium and long term corrosion protection applications. This product is highly recommended for protecting bright steel wire, bars, billets, sections and sheets during long term storage and transport. It can also be used as an underbody protective. Ankor Wax is easily applied by spraying, brushing or dipping. The low viscosity of this product ensures minimum drag out when using the dipping process, and in large scale systems this can show significant saving over other types of products.
If parts that have been treated with Ankor Wax are to be subsequently painted, the coating must be removed prior to painting and this can be achieved using hydrocarbon solvents or selective alkaline degreasants. It is recommended that product is stored in a cool area with bungs or caps tightly closed so as to avoid evaporation of the solvent, which would lead to excessive thickening of the product, making application increasingly difficult.

Four syllables: evaporust

Uses chelation to remove the iron oxide but won't leave a residue or damage paintwork. Is nontoxic and can be reused. If the paint is loose it may lift up, though, if you let it soak too long.
