how do i tell the difference

Is it possible to tell the difference between an indian and Italian GP headset with out taking it apart?

The obvious and visible immediately is the thickness (diameter) of the handlebars where the gearchange and switch housing meet it. Indian thicker by ?5mm?, The gearchange and switch housing are correspondently different. If not familiar you'd need the two different types side by side. Someone will be able to post up a photo. (hopefully). S

the Italian headset is narrow at the ends where it meets the gearchange and brake lever housing, the Indians did make an early version same narrow size as the Italian, but hard to come by, the sil ones you will find most selling now are the later wider ones and are pretty rough, needing plenty of work to prep for paint

Don't forgot there are Viet ones out there made to Italian sizes....

later indian ones also have the 2 i'll call them lumps on the underside of the headset bottom which is the more clear difference.
