Should the piston be at BDC before the test? also how long should the pressure hold?

Yes and leave it for 5mins to see if it drops

piston at bdc before the test: see if it holds pressure if it does then as a better test slowly rotate crank wait till pressure settles check for pressure drops; then spin again: do it slowly through one full rotation in stages it’ll give a thorough test of seals and crank under rotation; the gauge will fluctuate as you turn the crank itll settle back when you stop; max air loss 1psi per min; try to get lower than that; test at between 5psi min and 7psi max

Yes if you have suspected leak spray with soapy water find leaks fix and retest around mag housing or base gasket can be common areas
